Chiang Mai Grand Canyon: Water Park, Tickets and Visitor Guide

Chiang Mai Grand Canyon is a flooded former quarry in Hang Dong, southwest of the city. Today, the area has two neighboring attractions, including a large water park with floating obstacle courses, slides, kayaking and a zipline. This guide explains which Grand Canyon to visit, current ticket prices, how to get there and what to know before spending a day on the water.

Chiang Mai Grand Canyon: Which Park Should You Visit?

There are two neighboring attractions commonly called Chiang Mai Grand Canyon. Both occupy former quarry areas, but they offer different experiences and require separate admission.

Grand Canyon Water Park is the larger attraction, with a giant inflatable obstacle course, water slides, paddling activities, a zipline, wakeboarding and a children’s water park. It has changing facilities, lockers and places to eat. This is the attraction covered in most of this guide.

Grand Canyon Hang Dong is the smaller neighboring quarry attraction. It has traditionally offered a simpler swimming and cliff-jumping experience at a much lower admission price. However, its facilities, supervision and access arrangements may differ from the larger water park. Check its current operating status before making the journey, and never jump from unapproved quarry edges.

If you are visiting Chiang Mai for the first time, the larger water park is the straightforward option for a full afternoon of organized water activities. If you mainly want to see the quarry scenery rather than use the attractions, consider whether the admission cost makes sense for you.

The Grand Canyon is around 20 kilometers southwest of central Chiang Mai, so allow time for transport in both directions. For more advice on organizing your trip, choosing accommodation and exploring the surrounding area, see our Chiang Mai travel guide.

Grand Canyon Water Park Tickets, Prices and Opening Hours

Grand Canyon Water Park is a relatively expensive activity by Chiang Mai backpacker standards. The standard ticket includes most of the water attractions, but some activities, food and other facilities cost extra.

How Much Does Grand Canyon Water Park Cost?

As of September 2026, the official website advertises the following ticket packages:

  • Standard adult ticket: 1,200 THB. Includes all-day admission to the water park, eligible water activities and one zipline ride.
  • Children’s ticket: 1,000 THB. Applies to children in the advertised height category of approximately 90 to 120 centimeters. Younger children may enter free, although activity restrictions still apply.
  • Water park and return transport: 1,500 THB. Includes standard admission and a shared red-truck transfer from Chiang Mai city.
  • Water park and wakeboarding: 1,650 THB. Adds a one-hour wakeboarding session to standard admission.
  • Water park, wakeboarding and return transport: 1,950 THB. Combines admission, wakeboarding and shared transport.

Ticket prices and promotional offers can change. Some older booking cards on the park’s website still show different prices, so confirm the final amount before paying. Check the official Grand Canyon Water Park website for current packages and booking conditions.

The advertised standard ticket includes a life jacket, the floating water park, eligible slides, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, water bikes and one zipline ride. Wakeboarding, food, drinks and locker rental are not included.

Locker rental is advertised at 100 THB, with an additional 100 THB refundable deposit. Bring enough money for these extras and your transport unless they are covered by your package.

Grand Canyon Water Park Opening Hours

The water park advertises daily opening hours from 10 am to 7 pm. However, individual activities can close temporarily because of thunderstorms, strong winds or heavy rain.

Allow at least three to four hours inside the park if you want to try several activities. Including transport from central Chiang Mai, most visitors should set aside around half a day or longer.

Arriving near opening time gives you more flexibility to explore the different attractions. If you book the shared transport package, check your assigned pickup and return times before paying.

Things to Do at Chiang Mai Grand Canyon

The main attraction is the large floating water park, although there are several other activities for visitors who want something less demanding or more adventurous.

Floating Obstacle Course and Water Slides

The giant inflatable obstacle course is the centerpiece of Grand Canyon Water Park. It has floating platforms, climbing obstacles, slides and sections where you need to balance while moving across the water.

Expect to fall in repeatedly. The course is more physically demanding than it looks, particularly when you need to climb back onto the inflatables after swimming or falling into deep water.

The park also has large water slides and a floating trampoline. Some attractions have age, height or other restrictions. The official ticket information currently limits the giant slide to visitors aged 15 and older, so confirm eligibility before booking.

Kayaking and Stand-Up Paddleboarding

If you prefer something less intense, try kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding. Both are included in the advertised standard admission package, subject to availability and the park’s operating rules.

These activities offer a different way to enjoy the quarry scenery without spending your entire visit on the obstacle course. They can also provide a useful break between more demanding activities.

Zipline, Cliff Jumping and Wakeboarding

For a bigger adrenaline rush, the park offers a zipline and designated high-jumping platforms. The standard ticket includes one zipline ride, with a published maximum weight of 100 kilograms.

High-platform jumping is restricted to adults aged 18 and older under the park’s published rules. Only use approved platforms while the activity is operating and follow staff instructions. Do not jump from the natural quarry walls or other unmarked areas.

Cliff jumping is a popular activity at the park.

Wakeboarding is another option, but it is not included in the basic ticket. Choose a package that includes it if you specifically want to try the activity. Confirm whether your session is shared and how much time you will actually spend on the water.

Children’s Water Park and Facilities

Grand Canyon Water Park also has a dedicated children’s zone with smaller water attractions. Families should check the current age and height restrictions, as admission does not mean every activity is suitable for every child.

Children need continuous adult supervision, including in the designated children’s area. Life jackets are compulsory for water activities throughout the park.

Changing facilities, toilets, showers, lockers and places to buy food and drinks are available. The park does not permit visitors to bring outside food and drinks.

How to Get to the Grand Canyon from Chiang Mai

Grand Canyon Water Park is at 202 Moo 3, Nam Phrae, Hang Dong District, approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Chiang Mai’s Old City. The journey typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes by car, depending on traffic and your starting location.

Grab or a Private Driver

Booking a car through Grab is a convenient way to reach the water park if you do not want to drive. Check the fare in the app before booking, as prices vary with demand and your pickup location.

The catch is the return journey. There may be fewer available drivers around Hang Dong than in central Chiang Mai. Consider arranging a return trip with your driver or booking transport through the park rather than assuming you can immediately find another car.

Shared Red-Truck Transfer

The water park sells ticket packages that include shared round-trip transport from Chiang Mai city. This is useful for solo travelers, backpackers and groups that do not have their own transport.

Confirm that your accommodation is within the pickup area. The park offers scheduled pickups and departures, so the transfer may give you less flexibility than a private driver. Advance booking is advisable if you need a particular time.

Renting a Scooter

A scooter gives experienced riders flexibility to visit the water park and explore other parts of Hang Dong on the same day. However, the route includes busy roads, and the return trip can be unpleasant in heavy rain or after a tiring afternoon in the water.

Only rent a scooter if you already have riding experience, the appropriate motorcycle license and any required international driving permit. Make sure your insurance covers riding in Thailand. Our guide to renting scooters in Chiang Mai explains the costs, paperwork and practical safety checks.

If you have never ridden a motorcycle, book a car or use the water park’s transfer service instead.

Safety, Weather and What to Bring

Grand Canyon Water Park operates in a deep former quarry, so it is not the same as visiting a shallow swimming pool. The park provides compulsory life jackets and advertises trained lifeguards, but visitors still need to follow the rules and judge which activities match their abilities.

Is Chiang Mai Grand Canyon Safe?

Safety depends on the activity, your swimming confidence, the weather and whether you follow staff instructions. The floating course can be tiring, and high jumps and slides carry additional risks.

Wear your life jacket properly throughout water activities. Do not enter closed areas, attempt unapproved jumps or use attractions outside their stated age and height limits. Children must remain under adult supervision.

The park says that swimming experience is not required because life jackets and lifeguards are provided. However, non-swimmers may find the deep-water obstacle course stressful. If you are uncomfortable in deep water, ask staff which activities are appropriate and do not feel pressured into trying everything.

Some rides are unsuitable for people with particular medical conditions, including certain heart or neck problems, and during pregnancy. Follow the park’s published restrictions and seek medical advice if you are unsure about participating.

What Should You Bring?

  • Swimwear and a towel.
  • A change of clothes for the journey back.
  • Water-resistant sunscreen and a hat for time outside the water.
  • A rash guard or swimming shirt for extra sun protection.
  • A waterproof pouch if you want to carry your phone near the water.
  • Money or an accepted payment method for food, drinks, lockers and any optional activities.
  • A small bag for wet clothes after your visit.

Leave unnecessary valuables at your accommodation. Use a locker for anything you do bring, rather than leaving belongings unattended while you are in the water.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

The cooler, drier months from November to January generally make travel around Chiang Mai more comfortable. However, the water park is an outdoor attraction, so check the weather for your specific visit.

February to April can bring extreme heat and serious seasonal air pollution to northern Thailand. If PM2.5 levels are high, avoid spending hours on strenuous outdoor activities. Check current air-quality readings before setting off.

During the rainy season, usually from May to October, allow more flexibility. The park says it remains open during light rain, but individual activities may stop during heavy rain, strong winds or thunderstorms.

Check the forecast before buying a nonrefundable ticket. The park’s published ticket terms state that refunds may not be available even when severe weather interrupts activities. Confirm the conditions for your particular booking.

Is Chiang Mai Grand Canyon Worth Visiting?

Chiang Mai Grand Canyon is worth considering if you enjoy swimming, obstacle courses, adventure activities or spending an active day with friends. The larger water park offers several different attractions in one location, which can make the admission price more worthwhile if you intend to use them.

Good choice if: You have at least three days in Chiang Mai, enjoy water activities and want a break from temples, cafes and markets. The Grand Canyon can also work as a social day out for hostel groups or digital nomads taking time away from their laptops.

Skip it if: You only want to photograph the quarry, dislike water activities or are trying to keep your daily spending very low. The standard ticket is expensive compared with many other activities around Chiang Mai. If you have only one or two days, prioritize the experiences you came to northern Thailand for.

For a relaxed visit, leave central Chiang Mai in the morning, arrive near opening time and spend three or four hours exploring the park. Have lunch there if you plan to stay longer, then return to the city in the afternoon. Avoid scheduling an important work call immediately after your planned return, particularly if you depend on shared transport.

If water parks are not your thing but you still want an active evening, consider a live fight night instead. Our guide to watching Muay Thai in Chiang Mai explains the different venues and what to expect.
